On August 16, 2022, the 10th China Information Technology Expo (CITE 2022) was held at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center (Futian). The "Automotive Electronics Summit Forum" hosted by ICwise, a well-known semiconductor industry think-tank, was held concurrently with the expo. The Automotive Electronics Summit Forum is the only summit in the field of integrated circuits and automotive electronics at the expo. The conference guests included experts and scholars from key domestic and foreign enterprises, who gave wonderful sharing on the automotive chip market conditions and cutting-edge trends, attracting hundreds of spectators to attend.
The forum was presided over by the Chairman of Qingdao SunHydro and former Vice President and Chief Engineer of SAIC. Distinguished guests, including Wei Zhuang, Foreign Full Member of the Russian Academy of Engineering, President Wei Chen of the Guangdong Integrated Circuit Industry Association, and Honorary President Shengming Zhou of the Shenzhen Semiconductor Industry Association, delivered opening remarks.
As an invited guest, Pengfei Zhang, Chairman of the company, delivered a keynote speech at the conference. Pengfei Zhang said that thanks to policy promotion, environmental protection requirements, and technological development and progress, the automotive industry has witnessed an unprecedented major transformation. The development of the "new four modernizations" (electrification, connectivity, intelligence, and future sharing) has led to an increasing demand for the quantity, quality, and dependence on chips. The automotive chip supply chain has high requirements for safety and stability. Looking at the entire chip industry, automotive electronics is the only sub-field with a double-digit growth rate, far exceeding that of consumer electronics and communications. This is also the reason why automotive OEMs have started to hold shares in chip manufacturers and establish joint-venture companies. BYD has even built its own IGBT supply chain. OEMs hope to have control over the chip supply chain in their own hands to ensure safety and stability. Electrification is an irreversible trend in the development of the automotive industry. The reason why consumers buy new energy vehicles has shifted from policy subsidies to user experience.
Pengfei Zhang noted that the global annual sales of new cars exceed 100 million, and more than 70% of them are economy-class self-driving cars below 150,000 yuan. These 70 million new cars will become electric vehicles within 10 years, and 90% of them will be produced in China. This is because China has the most mature and fastest-developing electric vehicle industry ecosystem. At the same time, the electric vehicle industry can also perfectly solve the two dilemmas faced by China's chip industry: low-end involution and high-end "bottleneck" issues. Regarding the former, due to the high requirements for safety and reliability of automotive chips, there is no short-term, quick-return chip development. The automotive chip industry is more suitable for deep binding of the upstream and downstream of the industrial chain, thus eliminating short-term, low-end involution. Regarding the latter, through in-depth cooperation in the industrial chain, we can make long-term investments, tackle the most difficult tasks, and carry out the most challenging technological development, so as to get rid of dependence on foreign countries. At present, the electric vehicle industry is not only a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for China's automotive industry but also a good opportunity for the comprehensive breakthrough of China's chip industry.
Other keynote speakers at the forum included Qiqun Chen, General Manager of the Semiconductor Business Group of Foxconn Industrial Internet Co., Ltd.,; Gang Sun, Vice President of Product Marketing at Qualcomm Technologies, INC; Xiaoyang Zhou, CEO of AccoPower Semiconductor Co., Ltd.; Jie Li, CEO of IKAS; Jian Xu, Chief Ecosystem Officer and Vice President of Horizon Robotics; and Jinxiang Li, Director and Chief Engineer of Huada Semiconductor, who shared their perspectives on the future of the automotive electronics industry.
Following the keynote speeches, a roundtable discussion was moderated by Shengming Zhou, Honorary President of the Shenzhen Semiconductor Industry Association. Company Chairman Pengfei Zhang, along with Xun Liu, General Manager of CECport, Yeshun Dong, Partner of Volcanics Venture, Jinglei Cheng, Chairman of Qingdao SunHydro, Wei Xu, CEO of AscenPower, and Xiaoyang Zhou, CEO of AccoPower Semiconductor Co., Ltd., engaged in an in-depth discussion on topics such as "How can China's automotive industry build a secure supply chain under the new international situation?", "How can third-generation semiconductors support automotive electronics?", and "Future development trends of automotive chips".
